Script It! in Premiere Pro with a lined script, takes and frame marks

Start in Manual.

Lay out your takes as a lined script. Add marks, compare reads and cue the matching footage inside Premiere.

Manual mode is free, with a support bar.

Let Auto take a pass.

Match dialogue to the script automatically, then review and refine the marks. Registration also unlocks candle reordering and section copy/paste with candles and marks.

Read the Guide

Install in Premiere Pro

  1. Requires Premiere Pro 26.5 or later and Creative Cloud desktop. The same .ccx installer works on Apple Silicon/Intel Macs and Windows x64.
  2. When the Open Beta is published, download Script-It.ccx using the Premiere Pro button above, open it and choose Install in Creative Cloud.
  3. Approve any administrator prompt, then open Window → UXP Plugins → Script It! in Premiere. Restart Premiere if needed.
  4. If prompted, enable Developer Mode in Premiere’s Plugins preferences and reopen the panel.
If installation is blocked

Mac

  • Try installing and opening Script It!, then dismiss the warning. In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Security, find the plugin and choose Open Anyway.
  • If macOS says the file is damaged or harmful, stop and contact workflowdept@gmail.com. Keep system security protections enabled.

Windows

  • If SmartScreen shows an unrecognized-file warning, choose More info, check the file and select Run anyway if offered.
  • If Smart App Control or your organization blocks installation without that option, contact workflowdept@gmail.com or your administrator. No antivirus changes are needed.

Registration and activation

  • Register Script It! for $75 with PayPal, applying a promo code if you have one. One registration covers Premiere Pro and future Avid and Resolve editions as they become available. Resolve support is planned, subject to compatibility testing, and is not guaranteed. Paste the activation code emailed after payment into Settings → Activation → Activate / Manage… and click Activate.
  • Choose Recover code / Manage activations to receive a secure link at your registration email. Confirm that link to copy your code or deactivate an installation before activating another computer.
  • Activation checks run quietly at most once a day. You can work offline for up to 90 days after the last successful check; connection failures do not show error popups.
  • A deactivated computer loses paid features at its next successful online check, or when its offline activation expires. Existing work remains available.
  • Manual mode stays free with a support bar. Activation unlocks Auto modes, candle reordering and section copy/paste with candles and marks. After activation, read the clip-naming reminder in the bottom chin and click I Understand to dismiss it.

New and Import

  • Open and save a Premiere project. Manual mode is free; activate this computer to unlock Auto and the other paid features.
  • Choose New to write a script, Import for a UTF-8 .txt file, or paste plain text into an empty Script window.
  • Imported scripts begin with six editable blank rows for setup cards.

Find your way around

  • Use the top dropdown to switch scripts. Scene and Page jump to labels in the script.
  • Search finds text. Enter moves to the next match; Shift+Enter moves to the previous one.
  • The chevron shows or hides the editing tools. Settings groups Appearance, Auto Synch and Script tools. Advanced, Recovery & backup and Activation have separate collapsible sections.

Modes

Choose a mode beside Script It!, then click Script It! to run it.

  • Manual — Add the selected Project clip to your selected script rows or an existing setup. Place the marks yourself.
  • Auto: Use Markers — Match dialogue automatically within the configured Start/End marker regions. If neither marker color is present, Auto checks the whole clip.
  • Auto: Bypass Markers — Match dialogue automatically without those marker regions. Repeated or restarted performances get separate candles.

"Script It!" button — add takes

  1. Select the script rows covered by the take.
  2. Select a clip in Premiere’s Project panel.
  3. Choose Manual beside Script It!, then click Script It!.
  4. To add another take to an existing setup, select its card first. Click away from the card to create a new setup instead.

Marks, cues and coverage

  • Click a candle or mark once to select it. Shift-click extends the selected row range.
  • Select a candle row, find the matching frame in Source, then click the diamond Mark button. Marking that row again updates its existing mark.
  • Double-click a mark or candle row to cue the footage. Advanced → Pre-roll Playback cues earlier by 0.0–5.0 seconds (default 0.5); set 0.0 for the saved frame. Positions between marks are estimated.
  • Command-drag a mark to move it to an unmarked row without changing its frame. Use Ctrl on Windows.
  • Command/Ctrl-drag a candle’s top or bottom cap to adjust coverage. Trimming hides annotations outside the range; expanding restores them.
  • Backspace/Delete removes the selected mark, candle or setup and its candles.

Off-screen and color

  • Select candle rows and click the squiggle to toggle off-screen passages.
  • Click Color to apply the current color. Right-click it to open the palette.
  • Trimming coverage keeps hidden marks, colors and off-screen passages for later expansion.

Thumbnails and setup layout

  • Double-click a setup card to cue its preview frame. Without a saved choice, the preview starts at the clip’s midpoint.
  • Select a card and press Left/Right to shuttle the preview. Reselect the card to reset shuttle speed.
  • Drag a card sideways as far as needed to move its candles with it. Drag vertically to move only the card; hold Command/Ctrl to move the whole setup vertically.
  • Use the candle-arrow buttons to reorder takes in a setup. Narrowing the panel keeps cards and the wrap margin in place; use the bottom scrollbar to reach content outside the panel.
  • For older scripts, use Settings → Script tools → Generate thumbnails. Audio or unavailable images show clip names. Multicam thumbnails do not automatically follow Source camera-angle changes.

Appearance

  • Thumbnail Size changes the cards. Candle Size (%) changes candle width, outline, spacing and mark-triangle width together.
  • Text Size also changes row height. Wrap margin changes text wrapping. Automatically separate overlapping setups is off by default; enable its checkbox in Advanced when wanted.

Edit, copy and Undo

  • Double-click text to edit. Click away to save the change; Escape cancels.
  • Multiline paste creates script rows. Visual wrapping does not.
  • Outside an editor, plain-text paste inserts after the selected rows or appends at the end.
  • Toolbar Copy/Paste copies script sections. To include a setup and its candles, choose Include Setup in Section Copy from the card’s context menu.
  • Use Text Undo/Redo while typing and the circular Script Undo/Redo buttons for script changes. Premiere may intercept Command/Ctrl-Z.

Scene, Page and margins

  • Select a row and use S# or P# to add an optional Scene or Page label. The top dropdowns navigate these labels.
  • Import recognizes paired scene numbers and explicit page headers. Unclear numbers remain text; missing page labels are not invented.
  • Settings → Script tools → Remove Margin removes the base indent from selected rows, or the whole script if no rows are selected. Relative dialogue indents stay intact; Undo restores the original.
  • Advanced → Disclude Pages hides page labels and P# without deleting them. Page navigation still works.

Auto

  1. Select up to 300 clips in Premiere’s Project panel.
  2. Choose one of the Auto modes beside Script It!.
  3. Auto searches the whole script by default. In an Auto mode, use Scenes All–All to choose an inclusive Scene range. Selected Rows Only further limits the run to your selected rows.
  4. Click Script It!. If a transcript is missing, Script It! asks before Premiere creates it.
  5. Review the placed marks and results report. Repeating Auto keeps existing marks and manual corrections; unclear matches stay unmarked.

Clip names for Auto

  • Start Premiere Project clip names with [setup]-#: a setup code made of letters/numbers, a dash and a take number. For example, “2B-1a - WS” and “2B-2 - CU” group under setup 2B.
  • Add anything you like after the take number, including letters, dashes, slashes and underscores; that description does not affect grouping. In “2B-1a - WS”, the setup is 2B and the take number is 1; the “a” is a suffix. The alternatives 2B_1 and 2B/1 are also accepted. Rename the Project clips; you do not need to rename or move the original media files.
  • Candles sort by take number. Unmatched clip names can still be scripted, but each gets its own setup. Candle labels use Premiere’s Take Number column first, falling back to the filename when it is empty or a dash.
  • After Auto is unlocked, this naming reminder stays in the app’s bottom chin until you click I Understand. Open Help (?) to find the guide URL again.
Auto options

Start, End and Action

  • Settings → Auto Synch → Start Mark / End Mark chooses the source marker colors, green/red by default; each choice shows its Premiere color swatch. Start begins a take; End excludes speech until the next Start. With neither color present, Auto checks the whole clip.
  • Mark “Action” is off by default. Enable it to mark the last eligible unmatched Action before matched dialogue on the preceding script row. Switching it off keeps existing marks.

Multicam audio

  • All Unmuted analyzes each unmuted microphone and combines matching dialogue. Duplicate pickup creates one mark; conflicting timings stay unmarked. Marks cue the multicam itself.
  • Auto-Synch by Audio Track → Specific Track uses one numbered top-level track, even when muted. It does not change Premiere’s playback mix. A missing or empty track stops the run.
  • Place take-region markers on the multicam itself, rather than its underlying clips.

Auto progress and Cancel

  • The activity bar shows the stage and clip count, rather than estimated time remaining.
  • Cancel stops further work and leaves the Script unchanged. A Premiere transcription already running may need to finish; completed transcripts remain available.
  • Once Saving Script changes begins, use Undo after the run finishes. Reloading the interface does not cancel Auto.
  • The report lists clips with no dialogue placed and unplaced Start Mark regions. It does not list leftover crew speech.

Save, remove and relink

  • Save the Premiere project to keep scripts, candles, marks and annotations.
  • Settings → Script tools → Remove Current Script hides a script. Removed scripts restores it with its candles and marks; save the project afterward.
  • Settings → Script tools → Remove all clips from Current Script clears setups and their annotations in one undoable step. Script text and Scene/Page labels stay.
  • For offline footage, use the candle’s Verify and Relink action with the same footage. For an uncertain write, use Settings → Recovery & backup before editing again.

If something is not working

  • Source will not play after cueing: press Shift+2 (Premiere’s default Source Monitor shortcut), then Space.
  • A Project clip will not drag into Script: select it and use Manual → Script It! instead.
  • A clip will not link: merged clips and subclips are currently unsupported.
  • The interface is disconnected: use Settings → Recovery & backup → Reconnect Interface. It reconciles the current state without repeating the previous command.
